    Does the Balance-Of-Payments Matter At the Regional Level?

    The main focus of this paper is the importance of the balance-of-(international and interregional)-payments for the regional economies. Discussion centers on two points: 1) on one hand, we do believe that for regions, as a rule, at the overall balance-of-payments (BP) level, the size of imbalances is reduced; 2) on the other, we argue that even if relatively important imbalances arise their effect on regional economies is small. There are several reasons why regional BPs remain relatively well-balanced at overall level. The most important is that trade and current imbalances, that regions run very often with a considerable size, are easily financed by offsetting flows recorded as well in the BP. These trade and current imbalances, that do not pass into overall imbalances, are of benign kind. We present several reasons why that easy financing – allowing for trade and current imbalances – happens. As for the argument that a BP disequilibrium – if it arises – do not hit significantly a regional economy, that is the aftermath of a nationally integrated financial system, where the great majority of the regional units are only branches of national institutions operating all over the country. In this environment, a variation in the regional money stock (that is the counterpart of an overall BP imbalance) is not magnified by a money multiplier. We then conclude that as regions do not face any significant BP constraint, exports do not have any peculiar role in the regional growth process, and therefore the regional competitiveness debate is misplaced.

    A Regional Model for the Portuguese Economy Based on a Regional Accounting Matrix

    This paper presents a model for the Portuguese economy based on a so-called “Regional Accounting Matrix” (RAM). The RAM is an accounting table made up of information provided by the standard Portuguese National and Regional Accounts, with a similar framework than the well-known social accounting matrixes. The RAM includes regionalised information concerning the generation and the use of the households’ income, but other parts of the table, namely those referring the structure of inputs in the production process, are at national level. Starting with the RAM, the paper then develops an input-output-type model closed with respect to the households’ consumption. This model is based in a “no regional preference hypothesis in supplying each region”. By this hypothesis we mean that every increase in demand, even when regionally located, is complied by a national supply (and also by international imports), and not preferentially by an increase in output of the very concerned region. The model proposed for the Portuguese economy, for the year of 1995, includes the computation of several multipliers – the most striking of them describe the inter-regional income distribution process. In fact, an increase in income, at the beginning in benefit of the households living in one region, may cross the region borders and propagate into other regions, increasing then the households’ income in the latter regions. The model also provides other outstanding multipliers, as those describing the effect on the regional households’ income of changes in demand of 49 kinds of products, and those computing the change in output of these 49 products induced by exogenous shocks in the regional income.

    Inverse Symmetry Breaking in Multi-Scalar Field Theories

    We review how the phenomena of inverse symmetry breaking (and symmetry nonrestoration) may arise in the context of relativistic as well as nonrelativistic multi-scalar field theories. We discuss how the consideration of thermal effects on the couplings produce different transition patterns for both theories. For the relativistic case, these effects allow the appearance of inverse symmetry breaking (and symmetry nonrestoration) at arbitrarily large temperatures. On the other hand, the same phenomena are suppressed in the nonrelativistic case, which is relevant for condensed matter physics. In this case, symmetry nonrestoration does not happen while inverse symmetry is allowed only to be followed by symmetry restoration characterizing a reentrant phase.     Well-Centered Triangulation

    Meshes composed of well-centered simplices have nice orthogonal dual meshes (the dual Voronoi diagram). This is useful for certain numerical algorithms that prefer such primal-dual mesh pairs. We prove that well-centered meshes also have optimality properties and relationships to Delaunay and minmax angle triangulations. We present an iterative algorithm that seeks to transform a given triangulation in two or three dimensions into a well-centered one by minimizing a cost function and moving the interior vertices while keeping the mesh connectivity and boundary vertices fixed. The cost function is a direct result of a new characterization of well-centeredness in arbitrary dimensions that we present. Ours is the first optimization-based heuristic for well-centeredness, and the first one that applies in both two and three dimensions. We show the results of applying our algorithm to small and large two-dimensional meshes, some with a complex boundary, and obtain a well-centered tetrahedralization of the cube. We also show numerical evidence that our algorithm preserves gradation and that it improves the maximum and minimum angles of acute triangulations created by the best known previous method.Comment: Content has been added to experimental results section.     Symmetry Aspects in Nonrelativistic Multi-Scalar Field Models and Application to a Coupled Two-Species Dilute Bose Gas

    We discuss unusual aspects of symmetry that can happen due to entropic effects in the context of multi-scalar field theories at finite temperature. We present their consequences, in special, for the case of nonrelativistic models of hard core spheres. We show that for nonrelativistic models phenomena like inverse symmetry breaking and symmetry non-restoration cannot take place, but a reentrant phase at high temperatures is shown to be possible for some region of parameters. We then develop a model of interest in studies of Bose-Einstein condensation in dilute atomic gases and discuss about its phase transition patterns.     Brain-machine interfaces for rehabilitation in stroke: A review

    BACKGROUND: Motor paralysis after stroke has devastating consequences for the patients, families and caregivers. Although therapies have improved in the recent years, traditional rehabilitation still fails in patients with severe paralysis. Brain-machine interfaces (BMI) have emerged as a promising tool to guide motor rehabilitation interventions as they can be applied to patients with no residual movement. OBJECTIVE: This paper reviews the efficiency of BMI technologies to facilitate neuroplasticity and motor recovery after stroke. METHODS: We provide an overview of the existing rehabilitation therapies for stroke, the rationale behind the use of BMIs for motor rehabilitation, the current state of the art and the results achieved so far with BMI-based interventions, as well as the future perspectives of neural-machine interfaces. RESULTS: Since the first pilot study by Buch and colleagues in 2008, several controlled clinical studies have been conducted, demonstrating the efficacy of BMIs to facilitate functional recovery in completely paralyzed stroke patients with noninvasive technologies such as the electroencephalogram (EEG). CONCLUSIONS: Despite encouraging results, motor rehabilitation based on BMIs is still in a preliminary stage, and further improvements are required to boost its efficacy.
